VIRTUAL TIME CAPSULE

Adrian Harris from Southend’s historical website, Southend Timeline needs your help to create something rather special.  It’ll be a legacy that generations will enjoy in years to come.  But what is it – and how can you get involved?  Here he tells all…

“In 20 years time, will we remember that amazing Southend Summer of 2010? Of course people will talk about it, and remember fondly the time England won the World Cup, and the thousands of people who celebrated watching the final on huge screen outside the Kursaal; also Andy Murray will win the men’s single final at Wimbledon after the longest tie break in tennis history.  The heat who could forget that sun, it was here for weeks making it the hottest summer on record; those many amazing barbeques, the beach parties and festivals, all leading to the best ever Village Green event in Chalkwell Park.Southend

Unless you help us capture the moment we will lose the chance for ever to keep on record the Southend Summer of 2010.

Between Saturday 26th June and Saturday 25th September 2010, we want everyone to help us remember what could be the best summer ever.  How?  In a one off Virtual Time Capsule, the combination lock will be turned, the website will be open and then it is your chance for you to provide us something that was important to you during the summer.  Here are some basics that will allow your contribution to qualify:

  • It can be a photograph, recording, a song, or story, a blog, a joke, a poem, a painting.
  • Anyone can add to the Virtual Time Capsule no age limit, and visitors to the town are equally welcome to contribute.
  • Each item must have a link with Southend, this can be direct or indirect.  You could be reflecting on Wimbledon but how this made you feel as you listened to it on your radio while having sand kicked in your ice cream.

How can you contribute, if you have just created a fantastic painting during this summer and want it added to the Time Capsule, then we need a digital image of it, plus another of you standing next to the painting.  If you are providing a poem, then record it as you want it to be read plus email the verse.  Send digital photographs.  If you are dancing get someone to film you doing it.  If you are playing sport, get it filmed and send it digitally to the website.Southend

There are going to be so many ways in which everyone can contribute we want to show, how diverse, creative, and simply amazing the people who love Southend, and live in Southend can be.

Your reward to contribute to a piece of Southend History that forever will be protected, and provide your children and grandchildren something for them to reflect and to remember that fabulous Southend Summer of 2010.

Here are some more ideas to get you thinking.

You love your garden or allotment and this year is going to be the best, then show us your plums, your strawbs, your flower beds, take photos or film it with you beside them showing your fantastic work.

You could be working during the summer show us your work place film your colleagues.

This summer could see some great celebrations maybe weddings, engagements or parties in Southend for the fun of it film your night out, or the function, record the best man’s speech.

Maybe you are visiting Southend then tell us what you did where went and what you enjoyed the most or not as the case maybe.

Schools, we want projects from Southend kids who can record life in their classrooms, and the school trip out.

And so it goes on, remember we only have roughly 13 weeks.”
